Hello everyone.

As you may already know, in order to enable Disk Cleanup on Windows Server 2008 R2, you have to install one of the Microsoft Updates, KB2852386.

This can help you if you are running out of space on C: drive, and you want to free up some space. With Disk Cleanup, you can remove old update files etc.

After you install this Windows Update, you have to reboot the server unfortunately. After reboot, go and verify that the update has actually been installed:

Now, in order to use Disk Cleanup, you need to copy two files which are now present on server.

These files are called:

cleanmgr.exe

cleanmgr.exe.mui

The location where these files are stored is (I am doing this on Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit):

C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-cleanmgr_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_c9392808773cd7da\cleanmgr.exe

C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-cleanmgr.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_en-us_b9cb6194b257cc63\cleanmgr.exe.mui

After you have located these two files, copy the selected files to:

Cleanmgr.exe to C:\Windows\System32 folder and

Cleanmgr.exe.mui to C:\Windows\System32\en-US folder.

disk_cleanup_cleanup_manager

Now, open Command Prompt and just type: Cleanmgr.exe and that is it. But be careful, as usual 🙂
